The Arturia MiniFreak 49 takes the creative architecture of the MiniFreak into a more expressive instrument, featuring 49 full-size semi-weighted keys, velocity, and mono aftertouch. It combines two digital sound engines with 31 oscillator modes, six-voice polyphony, and an analog filter per voice, opening up a broad sonic palette that spans Virtual Analog, FM, wavetable, sampling, and granular synthesis.
At the heart of its enhanced workflow is the XYZ Touch Matrix, a pressure-sensitive surface that brings modulation, preset browsing, visualizers, and Freak Control together in one intuitive interface. Dedicated controls for both engines, aluminum pitch and modulation wheels, and a larger OLED display provide direct access to essential parameters for sound design and live performance.
The MiniFreak 49 also introduces audio-rate FM modulation of the analog filter, Voice Panning for stereo voice distribution, three effect slots, and a 64-step sequencer with four modulation tracks. Two Digital Engines, Over 30 Sonic Approaches
The two independent digital engines offer 31 oscillator modes, covering a wide range of synthesis techniques, including Virtual Analog, FM, wavetable, sample, and granular synthesis. Engine 2 can also process Engine 1, opening up further possibilities for complex textures, evolving soundscapes, and unconventional tones.
Analog Filter on Every Voice
Each of the six voices features its own analog state-variable filter with Low Pass, High Pass, and Band Pass modes. Resonance can drive the filter into self-oscillation, while Filter FM enables audio-rate modulation of the cutoff from either digital engine, adding harmonic richness and more aggressive, metallic textures.
The external audio input can also route audio through Engine 2, the analog filter, and the effects section, expanding the MiniFreak 49's sound-processing capabilities.
XYZ Touch Matrix and Freak Control
The multifunctional XYZ Touch Matrix provides four key interaction modes:
- Modulation Matrix: Directly assign modulation to parameters using color-coded feedback.
- Preset Browsing: Navigate presets quickly using touch and swipe gestures.
- Visualizer: Reactive visual animations that respond to the sound.
- Freak Control: Manipulate Macros, Gate, and Spice, along with parameters through bipolar and vector layouts.
The ability to lock a position on the Freak Control surface lets you retain specific settings, making it easier to control complex sonic changes during performance.
Advanced Modulation and Expressive Control
The two LFOs offer selectable waveforms, synchronization options, custom shape editing, and randomization. The cycling envelope supports Run and Loop modes and can reach audio rate, enabling everything from slow, evolving movement to complex modulation.
With Voice Panning, the six voices can be distributed independently across the stereo field, adding width and movement to chords, pads, and sequences.
Three Effect Slots with 13 Algorithms Each
The three independent effect slots offer 13 algorithms per slot, including options such as chorus, reverb, distortion, Super Unison, and vocoder. Combine different effects for subtle processing or dramatic creative transformations without relying on external plugins for every stage.
64-Step Sequencer and Arpeggiator
The built-in sequencer supports up to 64 steps and includes four modulation tracks for recording parameter changes. The arpeggiator offers octave jumps, ratchets, and repeats, while Spice & Dice introduces controlled variation and randomization into patterns, turning each sequence into a starting point for new ideas.
49 Keys for Expressive Performance
The 49 full-size semi-weighted keys with velocity and mono aftertouch offer a more expressive playing experience than the original MiniFreak's slim keys. Aluminum pitch and modulation wheels and a larger OLED display complete a performance-oriented interface designed for hands-on control, composition, and live playing.
